Why teach anyone anything?

Why Instruct?

The only justification for instruction is that one or more people cannot yet do something they need or want to be able to do.  Unless these two conditions exist, there is no valid reason to instruct.

Why people don't do what they should be doing

As you are well aware, people often don’t do what they know how to do, usually because of one or more of these reasons:

  • They don’t know what they are expected to do.
  • They don’t have the tools to perform as desired.
  • They aren’t given the authority to perform as desired.
  • They’re never told how well they’re doing.
  • They are punished for performing as desired.

I would like to add to this, that I think there are politically incorrect reasons which are not mentioned here by Mager. Although I always try to believe the best of all people and have often been caught short due to my naiveté, I unfortunately have to say that there are elements in human society that don't do what they are supposed to do, or do what they are not supposed to do, from sheer laziness, indifference and other negative characteristics.
